"The Evolution of the Cirkus for a new Generation" -Brian Packer ZAGG It took a team of about forty people, Months and Months of planning... but the cirkus was erected and brought into the heart of Salt Lake City, to blow the minds of every person who was lucky enough to be there that Saturday at the end of March. The Cirkus was a particularly hard event to construct, because of the sheer amount of work it took to put it all together, and because of restraints with the venue, our team wasn't able to start building the set up until 12:00 am the Morning of. So a team of about 25 hard working snowboard finatics stayed up all night, into the next day, moving over 30 tons of snow, building a several story scaffolding set up, and transforming the Gallivan Center, into the Modern Day Cirkus----- Thanks Team!

"You have heard of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey. You know the zany circus shows that come to every major city that claim to be the “greatest SHOW on Earth?” Well picture combining Barnum and Baileys “Greatest show on Earth with the Salt Lake City snowboard scene with the “greatest snow on Earth” and that is exactly what took place at the first ever Monster Cirkus: The Greatest Snow Bro Show I have ever seen!” -Dave Brewer, Snowboarder.com

On Saturday March 28th, Downtown Salt Lake City was bombarded with a huge event that was far different than any other snowboard event ever held within the capital city known for the greatest snow on Earth. You have heard of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey. Last week 32 headed up to one of their favorite resorts, Brighton, for an awesome day of slopestyle, rail/box comp, and free beer for all the riders. The event took place March 2nd (03/02... get it) and lift tickets were available for a mere $32 bones. True to Brighton form, the comp at the base of Milly was super styled out...not just tricks, but outfits too. (Oh yeah, the 80's called, they want their colors back!) And after all was said and done, we met up at Molly Greens for free pitchers. Mark Waters, from 32 and some of his crew even brought in huge speakers so we could jam out to some tunes while we chugged back the booze. I sat down with Mark and got a run down of how the event went for them. Mark said all in all they had 188 riders, about 100 in the slopestlye and 80 in the rail comp with $320 in prize money for the winners. As the day wore on and conditions became.. well, not so great (flat light, icy, hard pack, wind) the slopestyle got crazier and crazier. The fastest time of the day was on one of the last runs, earning Tyler Eamund and Wiki Jones the fastest times for the mens and womens races. For the rail comp, judges pick their favorite rider, Everest Arnold, to take first place. (No surprises there, this kid dominates Brighton park!) Due to the way Mark and the guys decided to handle the judging and prize money, the $320 plus a slew of other gear (including a 32 and Stepchild collaboration board, shoes, and gear from Etnies and 32) went to best overall rider Chris Brewster, and second place Carson Pippin. Mark said he and the rest of the 32 crew had a great time. It was apparent at our table at Molly's where the crew and some Brighton guys, including Jared, park crew, Matt from the rental shop, and some of the top riders, threw off their neon beanies and goggles and threw back some frosty cold ones. Mark said next year they may try to do the judging a little differently to even out the prizes, and hoped for better weather. (Just a better season all in all would be great!! He said the slopestlye was especially sketchy with our lack of snow.) Thanks to Mark for his time and all the 32/Brighton park crew for putting the event together. It was a blast! |

SIA '09 was the last year the trade show was in Vegas. We at Arkade had a rediculously good time and have the photos to prove it!
Tech 9 is lookin' G'd up from the feet up! Ride's new board line up had something for everyone. Leif likes to call this "networking".... Too many slushies! (that's our story and we're sticking to it.) Maybe it was the slushies, or just the bright colors of the new gear, but we felt like we could totally taste the rainbow. Tech 9 dials it in for the ladies!! Our model budget is running thin, we make do! We saw a lot of celebrities. Word up Sponge Bob. Ride Contra-Band came out with the craziest new binding this year, and continues to be cutting edge. Stunner shades Jeff Spicoli would be stoked on. (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, kids.) Straight up grubbin! Nitro team riders designed these bad ass boards. The new GNU ladies boards are sooo pretty! "You can't beat the beat, the beat beat!" We hope to see you guys shredding next year with some of this sweet gear! Peace out Vegas! Denver 2010... get ready. We're coming. |
